MID-LAKES COMMUNITY COALITION:

Mid-Lakes Community Coalition is a non-partisan organization conceived in November 1994 by a group of grassroots individuals concerned with maintaining a viable rural community and corresponding lifestyle. Individuals involved come from a broad base of occupations, experiences and educational backgrounds. The Mid-Lakes Region includes the area between Lake Diefenbaker, Last Mountain Lake, Buffalo Pound and Blackstrap.

The communities along this stretch of highway are heavily dependent on the success of the agricultural sector, and are facing issues such as depopulation, ageing population, and declining retail and service sectors. The persons involved with MLCC want to maintain viable rural communities and corresponding lifestyles. They recognize that an individual community may have difficulty but by communities combining resources the goal can be achieved.

MLCC does not have the political power to make policy decisions nor does it have financial resources. We do not view this as a detriment to achieving our goals. We have seen positive results in encouraging communities to work together and have written letters of support of projects for communities. There are several notable achievements to our credit: community symbols along the highway, annual Farm Art Mid-Lakes Exhibition (FAME) and most recently the supplementary naming of Highway #11 to Louis Riel Trail.

Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in Saskatchewan and that has become our primary focus. A significant amount of traffic travels along Louis Riel Trail for business and pleasure, therein lies an opportunity for economic spin-offs within each community. All of the listed projects have been to attract more travelers and to encourage them to stop in communities and experience the many and varied opportunities in rural Saskatchewan.

Our success can be credited to open dialogue, receptiveness of new ideas and "thinking outside the box".
